The Debate Club

Discussions on world culture, society and politics.

Based in the UK, I am impotent towards effecting the outcome of the US Presidential election, but undoubtedly it is the most interesting electoral race in decades, and also the most interesting debate, we've seen in while, so I am going to offer my two cents.

After watching the debate in full, I am curious to hear who other people think won the debate. I think Palin came across a bit too Southern belle, faulting on the substantial issues, like foreign policy and the global economy. Her 'you betchas' and 'dog gon its' sound folksy and cute, but they don't reassure people that they are or savings are safe.

Biden played his part well, he didn't appear obnoxious or condescending, spoke authoritatively and appeared statesmanlike. Palin in comparison, looked young, inexperienced and generally not ready to have a high-capacity role leading the superpower that is the United States of America.

Saying that, in this contest we saw no knock out punches. Biden did land a firm jab, comparing McCain's health plan policy to Palin's embarrassing bridge to nowhere and had an audience who promised no outbursts, to chortle heartily in unison. But Biden would not be able really to stamp his mark of victory on the debate in general, and Palin held up well and relieved many a Republican with a performance with was no way reminiscent of her earlier calamitous interviews on US television; where she appeared not only young and experienced but also incompetent and how else can I put this? A bit stupid as well.

Watch the debate decide for yourself, but I think Biden won, but it wasn't a thrashing. He margin of victory was enough to reassure Democrats and left-leaning independents. But not enough to dissuade Republicans from backing the red ticket.
